- Ria Mae Y. Booc - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines - The 385 pieces of assorted explosives earlier found at a junkyard owned by a scrap buyer in Barangay Banilad, Mandaue City were transferred yesterday to Toledo City where it will be detonated.

The explosives, believed to be remnants of the World War II, are kept in a storage owned by Urica Nitrate Philippines within the compound of Carmen Copper Corporation in Barangay Don Andres Soriano, Toledo City.

Supt. Rex Derilo, chief of the Firearms and Explosives Division in Central Visayas, said it will be kept in the storage until the C4 detonator which they have requested from Camp Crame will arrive.

Derilo said they will also ask the Armed Forces of the Philippines-Central Command to request detonators from the general headquarters.

The FED and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit of the AFP –Centcom will jointly detonate the explosives.

Supt. James Goforth, deputy city director for operation of the Mandaue City Police Office, said they will cooperate with the FED and Centcom on the disposal of the explosives.

“Kami lang ‘yung nag-lead ng transfer kasi dito sa Mandaue galing ang bombs and it was not safe here (Mandaue) for the meantime du’n muna (Carmen Copper Corp.),” he said in a phone interview.

The explosives were found by the workers of the scrap metal shop while clearing the area last July 5. (FREEMAN)
