Rivals open to end conflict

CEBU, Philippines - Are the families of once bitter political rivals Cebu City south district Rep. Tomas Osmeña and former mayor Alvin Garcia on the way to reconciliation?

 Reports reaching The FREEMAN revealed that the Garcias have been sending “feelers” to the Osmeña camp about a possible reconciliation and for the inclusion of Garcia’s son, Raymond, in the Bando Osmeña-Pundok Kauswagan (BOPK) slate for City Council in next year’s elections.

 In an interview with The FREEMAN, Raymond said they are open for possible reconciliation with the Osmeñas.

 “The Garcia side is always open for reconciliation but I don’t know their (Osmeña) side. Depende ra man gud kung kinsa ang mohimo og first move (It depends upon who will make the first move),” Raymond said.

He said he does not see any problem if his family and the Osmeñas will reconcile since some of their supporters wanted to broker to end their differences.

  “I haven’t talk to the former mayor. I am open to talk with Congressman Osmeña,” Raymond said.

He, however, clarified that their family does not want to force the issue as of this time. 

 Raymond said some of their supporters are supporting Osmeñna in 2013 election, explaining that he cannot support the reelection bid of Mayor Michael Rama. 

But he stressed that he and his father will not be running for any elective position next year.

Alvin and his wife, Ninette, could not be reached for comment as they are currently out of the country.

Political friends

In 1988, Tomas and Alvin launched their political careers together and won the election for mayor and vice mayor respectively.

Their tandem won again in the 1992 elections. It was only in 1995 that Tomas gave up a chance for a sure third term in favor of Alvin.

During Alvin’s term, Tomas began to openly criticize him for his style of management.

In 2001, Tomas regained the mayoralty post from Alvin by a slim margin of 3,030 votes.

Their political conflict also caused a rift between their wives, who used to be best friends.

ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE

 Tomas told The FREEMAN that the reconciliation won’t be easy but anything is possible.

 Asked if he is ready to talk with the Garcias, the congressman said “when people want to talk, we will talk.”

 His wife, City Councilor Margot Osmeña, said she does not want to force the situation as of this time.

 “To me, let us not force the issue. Things will always fall into the proper place and you don’t have to force the situation,” Margot said. — /LPM (FREEMAN)
