The Freeman celebrates 93rd anniversary

CEBU, Philippines - It was a celebration of the past, the present and the future in yesterday’s 93rd anniversary of The FREEMAN newspaper, the oldest existing newspaper in Cebu.

Just seven years short from celebrating its centennial year, The FREEMAN personnel along with the Philippine Star Group of publications family gathered in a joyful lunch at the MGB social hall of Star Group-Cebu Office along V. Gullas and D. Jakosalem Streets.

The momentous event started with a mass at 9:30 officiated by Msgr. Joselito Tajanlangit who in his sermon shared on the importance of looking at the past but leaving all the pain behind for a better future.He also focused on the importance of preserving what the company stands for, and that is on being a fair and fearless newspaper.A short program hosted by The FREEMAN columnist Leo Lastimosa followed immediately after the mass.

FREEMAN’s publisher Juanito Jabat looked back at the times when they were still starting in The FREEMAN and how they have surpassed all the hardships of the industry including being almost imprisoned for stories the paper printed despite controversies.

However, he said that TF, being a fair and fearless newspaper, fought for their rights and until now the paper has been known for its compassion in fearless journalism.Mr. Jabat was awarded yesterday for his valuable support and loyalty for TF for 47 years now, the longest among all TF employees.

TF columnist Aven Piramide also looked back during the time when The FREEMAN was at its lowest when some editorial staff and other employees left for another local paper.

As indicated in the story of TF chairman Jose “Dodong” Gullas’ article in yesterday’s issue on why he revived TF, it was in the early 90’s when the incident of the “backstabbing” happened, a term used by Sir Dodong in his article.

But despite what happened, Piramide said in his message that they saw the determination and love of Sir Dodong to keep the paper strong for the Cebuanos.

Sir Dodong, in his message, said of how hard it was reviving the paper and felt worst when he was backstabbed by some of his employees. However, he said he feels happy for having continued on his plans. “I fight best when the odds are greatest.” He said that he has learned to move on, forget what has happened and focus on The FREEMAN’s bright future.

Sir Dodong also expressed his gratefulness for the loyalty of the employees who have stuck with TF until now and is looking forward to seeing everyone in the centennial celebration in 2019. He then met with all the new employees and staff, making sure that everyone feels part of the family.

He also thanked the continued support of The Star Group of Publications headed by President Miguel Belmonte. All the employees were given cash incentives, gift items and plaques too for those who have been with the company for 10 years and above. — (FREEMAN)
