CEBU, Philippines - The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) – 7 will conduct a parallel investigation on two incidents of drowning in a popular beach resort in Lapu-Lapu City in the past two weeks.
CIDG-7 Director Jose Pante has ordered an investigation on the recent drowning incident at Portofino beach resort, saying they will not wait for a request from anyone.
“We are already anticipating. We might be directed to conduct an investigation on the case,” he said.
The director has directed Chief Insp. Patric Vaño, chief of the investigation department, and Chief Insp. Fermin D. Armendarez III, the head of CIDG Metro Cebu, to conduct a thorough probe.
The Lapu-Lapu City Police Office is also conducting an investigation on the matter.
That, as Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Paz Radaza also invited the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) to investigate the incidents. Radaza asked PRC to check the skills of the lifeguards, stressing that they need to ensure the safety of the guests of the city.
Chebar Albores, manager of Portofino beach resort, said they are ready for the investigation to address concerns over their resort’s safety measures.
Albores said, they have remained strict in reminding guests to be mindful of their safety while swimming. They have also placed safety signs throughout their 200-square meter beach to guide their guests where to swim.
The official investigation of the city is led by Councilor Queenie Amman, vice chairperson of the tourism committee.
Last Saturday, Irineo Tirol, 30, of barangay Day-as, Cordova town, drowned while swimming with his workmates. Tirol was reportedly drunk when he drowned. Two weeks ago, fourth year college student Crispin Cajes also drowned in the same beach while attending a birthday celebration of a relative. –(FREEMAN)
