Gorordo to partly close for road-sharing activity
CEBU, Philippines - Barangay Lahug yesterday announced part of Gorordo Ave. will be closed on June 12 from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a road sharing advocacy.
The advocacy, which pushes for the restoration of safety, order and courtesy in the streets, is being organized by the National Confederation of Transportworkers Union, Barangay Lahug, JCI-Zugbuana and RoadRev Movement.
“We are paying the same taxes everyday, so the road should be shared evenly between motorists and pedestrians,” said NCTU head Romeo Armamento.
The stretch of corner Gorordo Ave. and Escario St. up to Corner Salinas Drive and Archbishop Reyes Ave. will be divided into two, the Green Lane for the pedestrians and cyclists and the Vehicle Lane which is for motorists.
Dana Rojonan, an Environmental Advocate said “It is called Green Lane since vehicles cannot pass through it except for ambulances. That is why, it is also called Emergency Lane.
Rafael Christopher Yap, the executive director of CITOM, said he supports the advocacy. He said if it goes well, this may be done on a weekly basis and in other barangays in the city.
“During this particular day, volumes are less expected since it is on a holiday. If this would be implemented well, though you may have many traffic generators since the area is situated near Ayala and Gorordo, it will not be an issue of traffic. Congestion occurs when people don’t respect the rules. When rules are respected, order is established,” Yap said.
A vegetable garden project was also announced and families in Lahug were encouraged to plant vegetables outside their homes.
JCI-Zugbuana chose Sitio San Roque of Barangay Lahug as the pilot community to undergo the urban gardening program.
The plants to be placed in the vegetable garden come from Nestor Archival’s eco-house.
