Air Force to acquire defense equipment

CEBU, Philippines - The Philippine Air Force (PAF) will be acquiring external defense equipment to gradually build up their capabilities.

Air Force Commanding General Lt. General Lauro Catalino Dela Cruz said they will be doing so beginning this year.

In yesterday’s pre-anniversary celebration of the Philippine Air Force’s 65th year, Dela Cruz said that aside from new equipment, they are also working on the purchase of other necessary equipments.

According to Dela Cruz, they already submitted to Malacañang the list of the necessary equipment that needs to be purchased.

He said one of the first external defense equipment they would acquire is a state-of-the-art air defense radar.

“We will get one first so that we can gradually build up our capabilities,” he said.

After getting the air-defense radar, Dela Cruz said the next priority would be weapon systems that would fit the PAF’s needs.

“We will be acquiring other weapon systems and other equipment needed by the PAF,” said Dela Cruz.

PAF would also acquire one “special mission aircraft” aside from four search-and-rescue helicopters, and two light lift aircrafts that would replace the existing F-27 Fokker and N-24 Nomad aircraft being used by the military.

At least six fighters/trainers will also be acquired this year, giving the PAF a minimal interception and deterrent capability, he added although he declined to give the exact figures on how much this would cost.

“Today, I say, we will power up the Philippine Air Force. We have to develop our forces both in the sphere of internal and external defense to protect our nation,” Dela Cruz said.

He added that the PAF shall further strengthen its ranks. Airmen and women can expect the continuous modernization of PAF aimed to improve their service to the public.

Gen. Dela Cruz is optimistic that the present administration will not ignore the sacrifices of the PAF soldiers for the country. He vowed to continue reforms that had been started by his predecessor and craft more programs to enhance professionalism, capability and welfare of the soldiers.

He said that under his stewardship, good governance is the key to lead for “the wings for peace to soar in the country” and the strengthening of core values founded on moral ascendancy and integrity.

PAF has demonstrated its dedication in conducting disaster relief and rescue operations alongside its regular military missions, despite its limited equipment.

“Included in our priorities is to enhance our disaster capabilities to respond to either man-made or natural calamities. We’ve to equip better to effectively respond to all these challenges,” Dela Cruz said.

The PAF was at the forefront of relief and rescue operations in Eastern Visayas and Mindanao, which was battered by Typhoon Sendong in December last year.

With this, Dela Cruz said at least four brand new helicopters will be assigned for search and rescue operations of the PAF. (FREEMAN)
