DOE assures of enough power supply for Visayas

CEBU, Philippines - There is enough power supply in the Visayas, particularly in Cebu.

This was the assurance given by the Department of Energy through DOE Undersecretary Josefina Patricia Asirit who briefed members of the Provincial Board, during their session yesterday, about the power situation in the Visayas.

Asirit is the daughter of Vice Governor Agnes Magpale who is also the sister of DOE Secretary Jose Rene Almendras.

“We’re here to assure you nga naa ta, di ta makulangan og power supply, (We’re here to assure you that we have enough, there won’t be any shortage of power supply),” Asirit said as she discussed the three kinds of power generation, which include base load power generation, intermediate power generation and peak power generation.

“You will see that the power sa usa ka-adlaw from 1AM to 12Midnight, dili siya consistent Duna’y mga oras nga peak niya, duna pud nga ubos ra.(In a day, you will see that power generation is not consistent. There are peaks hours and there are times where it is lesser),” she explained.

In the Visayas, Asirit said the peak demand is during the evenings.

To supply these power needs 24/7, there are different power generation capacitors such as geothermal, gas, nuclear, hydro, wind, solar power and coal.

“The reserve requirement is the answer for regulating the grid,” Asirit said. She added that for every second, there has to be electricity pumping in the grid and compared it to the blood pumping in our veins.

Asirit added that the power crisis in Mindanao will not happen in Visayas, since Mindanao rely most on hydropower plants. (FREEMAN)
