Suicides in Toledo, Naga last Monday

CEBU, Philippines - Two men figured in separate suicide incidents in Toledo City and Naga City.

In Toledo, Renel Vicente, 24 years old, was found lifeless hanging from a santol tree beside his house in sitio Aleth, Barangay Cabitoon at 3am last Monday. A nylon rope was tied around his neck with the other end tied to the tree.

Initial investigation conducted by SPO1 Jemelon Cotmaya and PO2 Roxan Enerio revealed that Vicente was suffering from serious depression after he broke up with his girlfriend.

In Naga, Arcadio Alferez, 48 years old, was found dead hanging from a mango tree about 300 meters uphill from his residence. Alferez also used a nylon rope to tie himself to the tree. He was dead more or less at 11 am.

Initial investigation revealed that Alferez was a widow and was suffering from a nervous breakdown.

“Sige siya inum inum anang panahona, unya way kaon kaon… naa kunoy tao nagsunod sunod niya nga patyon siya, nya mao na to’y epekto sa nervous breakdown kay di siya katulog (He was always drunk and never ate his meals....he also said someone was always following him and wanted to kill him...that might have been the effect of his illness because he could not sleep),” said SPO 3 Elmer Opsima in a phone interview.

Opsima said that before the incident, Alferez reportedly told is relatives to go after him to the hill otherwise they would no longer see him. It was already too late when his relatives did follow to the area.

Both victims were declared dead on arrival at the hospital. – (FREEMAN)
