Rep. Salimbangon to file bill institutionalizing CNU-Medellin

-

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu fourth district Rep. Benhur Salimbangon will file a bill in Congress institutionalizing the Cebu Normal University (CNU) campus in Medellin town to spare local government units from the burden of paying the salaries of personnel as well as its maintenance and operating expenditures.

Salimbangon gave his assurance following the request of Medellin Mayor Ricardo Ramirez and other officials for CNU campus to be institutionalized.

“We are counting on Congressman Benhur (Salimbangon) to institutionalize it,” Ramirez said.

Salimbangon said he will do the same thing that he did for the training center in Curva, Medellin which is now under the supervision of Technical Education and Skills DevelopmentAuthority (TESDA) and has funding allocation from the national government.

The move will also address the apprehension of some parents that the change in local administration will affect the operation of the school like what happened to Mandaue City College.

The municipality of Medellin is reportedly allocating around P8 million a year to pay the salaries of CNU personnel; for the supplies and equipment, and other operating expenses.

The local government unit also provided housing for teachers who came from other places. Under its Memorandum of Agreement, the LGU of Medellin shall get 60 percent from the school’s income while 40 percent goes to CNU,

“Just keeping our neck above the water,” Ramirez said when asked how it worked after four years of operation.

Last April 3 marked first graduation ceremony for the CNU-Medellin Campus where 119 students graduated from education and computer programming courses. — (FREEMAN)
