Depressed father commits suicide

CEBU, Philippines - A farmer has committed suicide in Borbon town after learning that his daughter got pregnant for the second time without a husband.

Alfonso Orque, 47, of Sitio Manga, Barangay Bili, Borbon was found dead hanging inside a shanty located few meters away from his house. His family tried to revive him and brought him to Sogod District Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police Officer 2 Winston Magdadaro of the Borbon police station said that Orque had been depressed because his eldest daughter got pregnant the second time with the same man whom she had a four-year-old son but refused to marry her.

Orque’s daughter first got pregnant at the age of 19. He got so disappointed when he recently learned that his daughter, who is now 23-year-old, is again impregnated by the same man.

“Kahibawo sila nga mao ra’ng lakiha pero dili lang gyud disidido manubag ang lalaki (they knew that the same man who is not willing to take his responsibility),” Magdadaro said.

Meanwhile, an 83-year-old woman who left her house Sunday to collect firewood was found dead in Barangay Dawis Norte, Carmen town Monday morning.

Sofia Escoton was last seen by her family around 10:00 a.m. Sunday. She went out to gather firewood but has not returned home prompting her relatives to search for her.

Escoton was found by her relatives in the bushy area about 400 meters away from her residence. Dr. Elmer Batao, municipal health officer, believes that Escoton suffered from heat stroke.
