Carmen road faces closure if haulers won't help in repairs

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has threatened to close a provincial road in Carmen town if haulers reportedly responsible for the damage would not help repair it.

In a meeting at the Capitol, Garcia asked coal and quarry haulers to help in the road rehabilitation of Barangay Cogon-Corte Provincial Road in the Municipality of Carmen.

“Either I will close the road to all quarry activities in the area or you will help repair the road,” Garcia told the haulers.

Present during the meeting were coal miners Il Rey’C Mining and Seri Mining, M. Lhullier Quarry, and Japanese Company Yoshio Home Decorations, who also use six-wheeler close van trucks in transporting their decorative items from their manufacturing site in the area.

Garcia was convinced that the damage was caused by the heavy truckload of the quarry operators.

She gave the representatives one week for their respective company heads to decide on her proposal for them to contribute to the rehabilitation of the road.

Garcia wants the road repaired immediately as she already received several complaints from the residents in the area.

The initial plan is to lay a concrete-treated base before applying asphalt on the surface to strengthen the foundation of the 6.3-meter road, which is one of the busiest roads in Carmen for commercial operations.

For sand and gravel, the specified height of the dump box is 0.92 meters.  (FREEMAN)
