CPA sets P12M for CCTV; Eyes transport system

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines - A P12-million budget has been appropriated by the Cebu Port Authority (CPA) for the purchase of more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to be installed inside port premises. The purchase of additional CCTV cameras is part of CPA’s continuing safety development programs.

The CPA has some 50 CCTV cameras installed within ports here, but Port Security Safety and Environmental Management Department Director Oscar Lopez said more cameras are needed to cover other strategic areas.

“The CPA wants additional CCTV cameras to be installed in other strategic areas inside the port. This is part of the strengthening of our security measures to ensure that peace and order is maintained within our territorial jurisdiction,” Lopez said.

The installation of additional CCTV cameras will be done within the second quarter this year.

Meanwhile, the CPA is also eyeing at establishing a mass transport system to cater to passengers on their way to the port or from the port area to designated drop-off areas in the city.

Two options in order to realize the plan, Lopez said adding that they either bid it out to the private sector or implement it by themselves.

“The mass transport system is one of the CPA’s new projects for implementation this year. The budget is already there. We just have to determine the best option in implementing the transport system,” he said.

Part of the project is the purchase of four buses that can ferry passengers that have just disembarked from commercial vessels.

Currently, passengers have the option to ride the queued taxis accredited by the CPA or go outside and walk some distance away to get to public jeepneys.

“Not all disembarking passengers can afford to pay for taxi. Also during peak season, the number of accredited taxis may not be enough. So we are giving the passengers the option to choose for their own safety,” Lopez added. — (FREEMAN)
