Stakeholders urged to attend hearing of proposed fisheries ordinance
CEBU, Philippines - Fisher folk and agencies or organizations involved in the fishery sector are called to attend the public hearing on the proposed “Provincial Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ordinance of Cebu.”
The hearing will be on Wednesday, 3pm, at the session hall of the Provincial Capitol.
Principally authored by Board member Thadeo Ouano, the proposed measure aims to strengthen and consolidate all ordinances affecting fishing and fisheries to make them more responsive to the needs of the fishery industry.
“Akoang gi-awhag ang tanan natong mga mangingisda sa tibuok probinsiya nga magpadala sila ug ilang mga representante nga mutambong sa public hearing aron atong mahibaw-an ang ilang sentimento sa among ordinansa,” Ouano said.
Ouano said it is best that stakeholders will come up with a position paper on the issue.
The proposed ordinance also provides for stiffer penalties against those found engaged in illegal fishing and other related activities.
The proposed ordinance pushes for a P5,000 fine for various illegal fishing activities as well as confiscation of equipment/accessories used and marine products caught. Violators may also opt to render community service.
The proposed ordinance also seeks to ensure the rational and sustainable development, management and conservation of marine and aquatic resources in the province as well as to protect the rights of the fisher folk, fish farmers, their families and communities and the general public.
If the proposed ordinance is approved, no municipal fishing boats shall be allowed to fish without registration.
The vessel will also be required to use or display a color assigned for the municipality or city where it comes from. — (FREEMAN)
