Accidents kill two men

- Ria Mae Y. Booc -

CEBU, Philippines - Two men died in separate road accidents, including the nephew of a barangay official in Talisay, Sta. Fe in Bantayan island, while the other incident was in Dalaguete town.

Police said 22-year-old Christopher Cabrera, nephew of barangay captain Dorry Cabrera, did not make it alive to the Bantayan District Hospital where he was taken due to his fatal wound in the head.

Christopher, a resident of Barangay Okoy, was about to attend a benefit dance in Barangay Talisay on board his motorcycle when he lost control and rammed it to a tree about a few minutes after midnight on Wednesday.

PO1 Antonio Rayco of the Sta. Fe Police Station said Christopher was working as a store attendant in Barangay Talisay.

At about 9:00 in the evening, he went home in Barangay Okoy to change his shirt but while on his way back to Barangay Talisay, he met the accident as he reached a curve.

Residents said they heard the sound of a speeding motorcycle before a loud crash.

Christopher was thrown off from the bike and hit his head at a tree along the road.

In another incident, a 21-year-old died after he was ran over by a Ceres passenger bus at the national highway of Sitio Guiwanon, Barangay Poblacion, Dalaguete on Wednesday afternoon.

Declared dead on arrival at the Julio Cardinal Ro-sales Memorial Hospital was Ryan Orongan of Barangay Balud.

Now detained at the Dalaguete police stockade pending charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide was Gerald Gonzales, 43, of Inayawan Pardo, Cebu City.

Gonzales was the driver of the Ceres bus bearing GWY-680 plying from Cebu City towards Oslob town.

SPO1 Ethel Teves, of the Dalaguete Police Station, said that Orongan was traveling south on board his bicycle followed by the bus when Gonzales overtook Oro-ngan and hit him.

As Orongan fell on the road, the rear right tire of the bus ran over the victim.

Gonzales then turned himself over to the police. The case is set to be filed today at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office. (FREEMAN)
