Mushroom kills man; boy injured in grenade blast
CEBU, Philippines - Hoping to save a bit from their meal, a family in Sitio Tumpag, Barangay Guadalupe, Carcar City cooked a black mushroom which they got from a mountain area about noon on Sunday…little did they know that it would cause the death of one of their family members.
Danilo Dayonot, 38, did not make it to the Carcar District Hospital where his other siblings Aileen and Renante were also taken. Danilo died about 2:30 in the afternoon.
In a report over TV Patrol Central Visayas, Aileen claimed that it was Danilo who found and uprooted the mushroom. Upon reaching home, he then cooked it with sardines.
She added that a few minutes later, while they were eating, Danilo became weak and eventually died.
Aileen and Renante who also felt the same, were rushed to the hospital by their parents.
According to the attending physician, the bodies of both survivors became stiff when they were given primary medication. A person can be poisoned by a mushroom due to its toxic substances which causes a person to feel slight gastro-intestinal discomfort and could lead to death.
Mushroom poisoning could be a result of the ingestion of wild mushrooms when a person fails to identify inedible species.
The physician also advised the public not to eat mushrooms if they are not familiar with it.
Meanwhile, a 12-year-old boy suffered minor burns on his left arm after three unidentified men threw a hand grenade near a fountain at the park in Barangay Poblacion where he was sitting. Joseph Alfar, of Beatrice D. Durano St., Barangay Poblacion was then taken to the Danao District Hospital where he was medicated.
Alfar was sitting near a fountain when three unidentified men onboard a black-colored Honda XRM motorcycle with no plate number stopped nearby and threw a hand grenade about 1:30 in the morning on Sunday.
SPO2 Eldifonso Prosia suspected that the three men had no grudge against the kid.
“Gamay ra man ug samad nakagawas ra siya dayon wala pud siya’y kontra paregla lang gyud to,” Prosia said. Police only recovered fragments of the grenade and they are still investigating what happened. (FREEMAN)
