Philpost vows better services

CEBU, Philippines - The Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost) has vowed to serve customers better and to compete with private courier service next year.

This was declared by Philpost Chairman Cesar Sarino who visited Cebu and met with Capitol officials led by acting Governor Agnes Magpale yesterday.

Sarino told reporters that with the improvements in mail service delivery Philpost will be implementing next year, they expect to get back their lost customers.

“Since we can offer similar services at a lower price at the same speed I think there will be stiff competition starting next year,” Sarino said.

Philpost officials met their personnel in Cebu to inform them of the plans for next year on how to improve mail service delivery and reduce pilferage.

With the advent of modern communication technology, the mail volume in Philpost is going down.

But Sarino said they can maximize their people in other public services not directly involved in mail carrying but for customer servicing like remittances, cash cards, bayad centers, ticketing, and others.

Philpost was earlier eyed to be privatized to spare the government from putting in budgetary support.

Sarino said that he wants to show to the policy makers that by 2013 Philpost will be giving checks to the national coffers instead of getting it from the government.

“I told our policy makers, what if in 2013 I will give you checks?” he said.

The sprouting of private courier service up to the remote areas can be blamed on the previous management of Philpost, that, Sarino said, “did not do what they are supposed to do before.”

Sarino said that more stringent monitoring system has to be adopted and be jointly managed by partners with reputation.

Two hundred selected postal offices considered as top earners will be piloted within the year and most likely will include Cebu being a hub, Sarino added. (FREEMAN)
