Over P3M smuggled gun parts seized

- Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon -

CEBU, Philippines - An estimated P3.5 million worth of smuggled gun spare parts from the United States was seized yesterday by the Bureau of Customs.

The shipment contained in a 40-footer van was consigned to Renato Ramos of 1513 J. Rizal St., Cebu City.

Cebu customs district collector Ronnie Silvestre and Enforcement and Security Service district commander Camilo Cascolan, Jr. said that the shipment was declared as “household personal effects” from Hong Kong.

Apparently to mislead the government, the gun spare parts which include that of the M16 and M14 rifles were brought first to Hong Kong before it was shipped to Cebu.

Among the items confiscated were 1,080 pieces of M16 parts, 294 pieces of empty shells with primer, 100 pcs of 9mm lead, 100 pcs of .45 caliber lead, 997 pcs of .30 caliber lead, and 10 pcs butt stock.

Aside from firearm parts there were also six dismantled big bikes and some personal effects such as chairs, sofas, toys, picture frames, wall decor, and stuff toys.

Cascolan said that importation of used motorcycles is also prohibited. Silvestre said they are now preparing smuggling charges against the consignee and its broker, Rubio Brokerage. — (FREEMAN)
