Rama orders contractor to hasten Guadalupe-Kalunasan access road

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has ordered the Goldfin Construction to speed up the completion of the road project leading to a bridge that connects Barangays Guadalupe and Kalunasan.

Rama said the immediate completion of the road would help solve the traffic problem within the vicinity of the Capitol Building because of an on going drainage work.

The Bids and Awards Committee awarded the project to Goldfin Construction last month. Rama wanted to expedite the project to allow motorists going to Guadalupe from Lahug to already use the Guadalupe-Kalunasan Bridge.

The bridge which was constructed by the Department of Public Works and Highways and the city government during the administration of South District Rep. Tomas Osmeña as city mayor has not been used since its completion because of unfinished approaches.

Osmeña has been criticizing Rama for his alleged inaction to ensure that the P20M bridge is utilized. The congressman, however, welcomed the new development but still could not hold his punches.

He criticized Rama for taking more than a year to attend to the problem.

As soon as the access road becomes passable early next year, the volume of traffic on M. Velez and Escario Streets are expected to decrease as well as the travel time from Lahug to Guadalupe and vice versa.

Rama said after the completion of the road repair project the city will also repair the existing rough road at the vicinity of the riverbank going up to Andres Abellana Street. – (FREEMAN)
