Man survives suicide try

- Flor Z. Perolina -

CEBU, Philippines - A 20-year-old aircraft maintenance graduate attempted to end his life by jumping off the Marcelo Fernan Bridge Sunday evening because of alleged frustration that he could not land a job.

John Steve Clifford Encorporado of sitio Nonoc, Barangay Tabunok, Talisay City was rescued by a police officer and bystanders at the Pajara Park beneath the bridge immediately after jumping off.

Encorporado was rushed to the Mandaue City District Hospital for treatment of minor bruises. Even if he only sustained minor injury he was still recommended for transfer at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for psychological examination.

Opao police station chief Inspector Wilson Abot said that based on their investigation, Encorporado was depressed because he could not find a job.

He was allegedly pressured because of shame to his aunt, who sent him to school, that until now he still did not have a job.

According to Abot, they learned that Encorporado has been looking for a job the whole day but when he again failed to get any, he decided to commit suicide.

He was however fortunate enough that there were policemen detailed in the park because the police were anticipating that many people would stay at the park during the weekend to go swimming at the Mactan Channel.  (FREEMAN)
