- Ryan Christopher J. Sorote -

CEBU, Philippines - A woman was drowned while trying to rescue her grandson who fell into the Butuanon River yesterday afternoon in Barangay Pulangbato, Cebu City.

Reports said Adelaida Velasquez, 50, was doing the laundry around 1:20 p.m. when she saw her grandson, Henry Velasquez, 4, fell into the river while playing with his friends.

In a desperate act to save him, Velasquez reportedly jumped into the river even if she does not know how to swim.

Personnel of Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation (ERUF) rushed the victims to North General Hospital where they were declared dead on arrival.

Lorna Miñoza, secretary of the barangay, told The FREEMAN that incident was the first in their area. — (FREEMAN)
