1st Central Visayas Cooperative Congress slated this week

CEBU, Philippines - The Victo National Cooperative Federation and Development Center is holding its 1st Central Visayas Cooperative Congress this week.

The three-day event will kick off on Thursday, October 20 to 22, at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.

Leaders from various successful cooperatives in the country are expected to join the congress which will be spearheaded by the Central Visayas Co-op Solidarity Council (CVCSC).

VICTO chief executive officer Mercedes “Ched” Castillo and Cebu News Workers Multi-Purpose Cooperative (NEWSCOOP ) chairman Elias Baquero earlier signed a memorandum of agreement  to co-chair in the  publicity and promotions of the coming event.

The upcoming congress is part of the kick off events in the International Year for Cooperatives 2012 as declared by the United Nations.

She said that the UN declared “IYC2012” as it recognized the cooperative business model as an effective vehicle for social development worldwide.

Castillo said that various cooperatives in the world have shown achievements in the UN’s Millennium Development Goals, which include among others; a) end poverty and hunger, b.) universal education, c) gender equality , d) child health, e) maternal health, f) combat HIV/AIDS, g.) environmental sustainability  and  h) global partnership .

During the scheduled congress, various cooperatives will exhibit their products and services and their best practices that contribute to their success and their members’ benefits.     - (THE FREEMAN)
