Brgy officials text for underground river

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines - The country’s more than 42,000 barangays will lead the synchronized text voting for the Puerto Princesa Underground River (PPUR) in today’s synchronized barangay assembly.

The underground river is bidding to be included as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.

Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo urged the barangays for the mass text voting to support the PPUR as it would certainly further boost the current high standing of the country’s lone candidate to the global polling competition.

The voting mechanics for PPUR is text PPUR to 2861 for all networks.

In today’s assembly, the barangay captains and the members shall deliver their report that includes the presentation of their accomplishment and financial reports covering the first semester of the year.

“They (punong barangays) shall also update their constituents on their ongoing programs and projects, and discuss issues such as peace and order situation, disaster preparedness, solid waste management and environment protection, among others,” said Patricio Gabuya, city director of the Department of Interior and Local Government.

The barangay officials may also undertake other activities during the assembly such as medical and dental missions and cultural presentations.

Proclamation No. 260 signed by President Aquino last September 30, 2011 amended Proclamation No. 342 and declared the last Saturday of March and the second Sunday of October 2011 and every year thereafter as barangay assembly days.

Today’s assembly also aims to drumbeat the celebration of 20 years of local autonomy in the country at the barangay level, which will also culminate this month.  (FREEMAN)
