Cop shoots, hurts security guard

- Ryan Christopher J. Sorote -

CEBU, Philippines - A security guard was shot and injured by a policeman in Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City Sunday evening.

Jerry Tinae, 33, of Unsave Security Agency who resides in sitio Pura, Barangay Apas, sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach after PO2 Eric Ricardel shot him during a confrontation around 11:45 p.m.

Ricardel told The FREEMAN that he was on duty at San Nicolas Police Station when his relatives, Danny Gonzaga and Julie Pogoy, and Tinae’s girlfriend, Divine Pogoy, called up for assistance claiming that Tinae was brandishing his .38 caliber firearm.

“The suspect’s girlfriend (Divine) phoned Ricardel after his father received threats from the armed and drunk Tinae,” Cebu City Police Office homicide investigator SPO4 Alex Dacua said.

Gonzaga, Pogoy and other residents were reportedly alarmed when Tinae, who was reportedly drunk, went berserk.

When Ricardel arrived at the area, he introduced himself as a policeman, asking Tinae to stop. “Bai, unsay problema? Pulis ni,” Ricardel reportedly told Tinae.

But Tinae reportedly got irked and raised his gun towards Ricardel, who immediately fired three shots at Tinae.

“Alang sa akong kaluwasan, mipabuto ko sa akong armas,” Ricardel told The FREEMAN.

Tinae, who was hit in the stomach, immediately boarded his motorcycle and drove toward Perpetual Succor Hospital. Upon reaching the hospital, he immediately lost consciousness.

“Wala na na kabalus si Tinae kay na igo man nako siya sa may tiyan,” Ricardel said.

According to Dacua, Tinae will face charges of direct assault.  (FREEMAN)
