Two dead following checkpoint shooting

- Niña G. Sumacot-Abenoja -

CEBU, Philippines - Two men, one of them a police asset, were killed after a shooting incident at a checkpoint along Sabellano St., Barangay Quiot, late yesterday afternoon.

Rogelio Yray, 40, a member of the Barangay Intelligence Network, was gunned down by motorcycle-for-hire driver Noel Cañeda, who was also later shot dead by PO1 Henry Alejandrino.

PO3 Geoffrey Gutual of the Homicide Section said policemen of the Punta Princesa Police Station were conducting their regular checkpoint at Sabellano St. at 5 pm along with some BIN members when the incident happened.

Cañeda, a resident of San Carlos Heights, Barangay Quiot, was driving a motorcycle and was flagged down by Yray.

The motorcycle-for-hire driver was angered and the two had a heated argument.

Before leaving the checkpoint, Gutual said the driver threatened Yray that he would come back for him.

Minutes later, the suspect came back on his motorcycle. He then disembarked and shot Yray in the head with a .38 cal. revolver.

The suspect ran off while the BIN member was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He had been working as an asset for the Punta Princesa Police Station for three years.

The policemen conducting the checkpoint ran after the suspect who was heading to the Basak Elementary School.

The chase reached the interior portion of Sitio Laguna, Barangay Basak-Pardo where PO1 Alejandrino was able to shoot the suspect.

The suspect was hit in the nape and died on the spot, Gutual said. — (FREEMAN)
