Brgy leaders move for eviction of squatters at Chinese cemetery

- Ramil V. Ayuman -

CEBU, Philippines - The “Unified Barangay Seven” (UB7) composed of Barangays Apas, Luz, Banilad, Hipodromo, Carreta, Kasambagan and Mabolo formally asked Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama to intervene in the problem of informal settlers living inside the Ludo Chinese cemetery in barangay Carreta.

Barangay leaders want to evict the informal settlers at the Chinese Cemetery because the area has been made as a hideout of criminals.

Most of the crimes committed along M.J. Cuenco Avenue near the Chinese Cemetery involved minors who are allegedly members of the gangs Bloods and Crips.

In Resolution No. 01 series of 2011, officials of Unified Barangay 7 and member-barangay captains requested the management of the LUDO Memorial Park located in barangay Carreta to effect the eviction of informal settlers living inside the cemetery.

This would support the objective of the group to intensify their campaign for crime prevention.

The UB7 received reports that crimes like snatching and robbery are rampant in the area.

The leaders were told that these crimes were committed allegedly in connivance with people living inside cemetery, believed to be a hideout of criminal elements.  (FREEMAN)
