Philpost soon to introduce email

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines - Despite the electronic mail and other modern mailing systems, the Philippine Postal Corporation (Philpost) continues to explore other opportunities in these changing times.

Part of these opportunities is the electronic business mail that Philpost is introducing this month.

Philpost director for operations Benito Queros said they believe that the postal mail service is still relevant today.

“Is Philpost relevant today? I will say, yes even if others shift to modern gadgets,” Queros said during yesterday’s weekly forum of the Association of Government Information Officers conducted by the Philippine Information Agency-7.

He said although personal communications have decreased in volume, the business mails continue to increase.

Queros said bills from telecommunication companies, banks, water firms, Social Security System, PhilHealth, among others, will soon be delivered through electronic mail.

“This will surely come before the end of the year,” he said.

Philpost is also planning for an electronic money transfer.

Queros, however, urged the public to go back to sending letters through the mail, saying that “postal mail will no longer be a snail mail as it takes 96-hours to make it to your doorstep if you are within Metro Cebu.”

He said there are instances that it takes weeks for letters to reach to their destinations because of insufficient address.

A postman delivers at least 300 letters a day.

Jocelyn Agravante, Philpost-7 1st district manager, said they continue to process postal identification cards.

The card costs P288 if availed within a week, while P488 if it delivered in three days.

Philpost has 1,976 post offices and postal mailing stations nationwide. In Cebu City, there are 10 post offices and an extension office at the Gaisano Country Mall. –(FREEMAN)
