Rainy weekend forecast

- Ryan Christopher J. Sorote -

CEBU, Philippines - It will be a rainy weekend for Cebu as the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (Pagasa) announced that rains will continue.

Pagasa weather observer Boy Artiaga told The Freeman that rains will continue for the next two to three days due to the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) system which continues to affect southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.

Artiaga said what happened on Wednesday was part of the ITCZ system that was made worse by the monsoon, hitting mostly Visayas and Mindanao.

Starting today until Monday, Pagasa predicts Cebu will have hot weather during midday and rains to pour late afternoons and into the evenings.

Cebu City and some parts of Mandaue City suffered from flooding in the past days. With frequent rains, Pagasa warns residents along riverbanks and on hills to be wary against flashfloods and landslides.

Thick rain clouds were hovering over Cebu City yesterday and Pagasa says this will continue in the coming days. The southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms.

Light to moderate winds blowing from the southeast will prevail over northern and central Luzon which will come from the southwest to west throughout the country.

The Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council identified more than 10 flood-prone areas.

The disaster council warned after Wednesday’s downpour that areas like Bonifacio St., Mabolo, Junquera St. and Lopez Jaena St., Barangay Santo Niño, Colon St., N. Bacalso Ave., Barangay Bulacao, Banawa and some parts of Guadalupe are flood-prone.

Several communities along creeks are also under constant monitoring because of threats that the river systems will overflow. — (FREEMAN)
