- Rene U. Borromeo -

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City officials have offered cash incentives to encourage barangay officials to strictly implement the solid waste management in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

Cebu City Councilor Eduardo Rama, chairman of the committee on public services of the city council, said that outstanding barangays will be chosen in three categories- coastal, urban and upland.Outstanding barangays from each category will receive P500,000 cash incentives from the City Government. Three other barangays will be chosen as first runner-up and will receive P200,000 each.

According to Rama, every barangay that will participate in the contest will receive P3,000 as consolation prize. Rama said the City Government has allocated a total of P2.4 million for the search for the outstanding barangays in solid waste management.

Councilor Nida Cabrera, who chairs the City Council’s Committee on Environment, has claimed that the participation of barangays in the program has grown stronger and achieved milestones because they have adopted their own version of regular clean up drive and some other innovative programs related to solid waste management.

Rama said that the giving of Mayor’s Environmental Award is also a manifestation of the city government’s desire to give due recognition of exemplary performance of the various barangays in carrying out the various programs and projects for the benefit of its constituents.

He said the giving of awards is also envisioned to develop potential assessment tools and benchmarking data useful for future assessment.Cabrera said the search will start this month and will end on November, days before the scheduled awarding ceremony. — THE FREEMAN
