CCPO to use music video to fight drugs

- Mechievilla Carline Benolerao -

CEBU, Philippines - Taking a respite from the usual anti-drug campaign, Cebu City Police Office Director Melvin Ramon Buenafe has embarked on something to win the interest of the youths by coming up an anti-drug music video using the jingle that the police official himself has composed.

At least 100 policemen from the 11 police precincts and support units of CCPO participated in the making of the music video which was directed by a group of Masscom students from the University of San Jose-Recoletos.

The 3-minute music video of the Movement Against Drugs (MAD) Jingle shows the policemen dancing with the 10 street children that were adopted by the Fuente Police Station and other people.

The video was filmed at the Plaza Independencia and the CCPO headquarters. Buenafe said he spent P20 000 out of his personal pocket to make the project, which he started conceptualizing a month ago, into a reality.

Buenafe said he chose music video as medium for his campaign against illegal drugs because he believes that music is more effective in bringing across the message as it is easily remembered.

“Music! mao nay pinaka maayong medium para sa paghatag ning mensahe against illegal drugs, kay kini usob-usobon, kanta-kantahon mahibaw-an sa mga tawo, dali mahinumduman…ma-remind sa tanan nga aduna tay concern like illegal drugs” Buenafe said.

Buenafe said he wanted to make people react adversely towards illegal drugs. According to him, he wanted to create a community that is hostile to it and strengthen the shield that protects the community against it.

Buenafe encouraged everybody to join this campaign. He even sung a few lines of his song “..mga estudyante, kabataan, ginikanan, mga trabahante, empleyado, negosyante, mga kaigsuonan kitang tanan , maghiusa ug mag-alsa batok kita sa pisting druga…”

Through this jingle, he said, the message would be installed to the minds of the people and think that this is something to support that we should have the spirit to fight the drug menace in our society.

Buenafe said he also chose to make the street children part of his music video because he thought that when these children are with them singing and dancing they are safe and that they are far from making crimes. These children are used to be rugby boys and snatchers.

He said they have this “PAPA LAB” (Pangga-on ug Amumahon Para Dili mahimong Labad ug Badlongon) movement for these street children to complement the anti-drug campaign.

The music video will be presented today during the march rally at 3 pm at the Fuente Osmeña Rotunda. —(FREEMAN)
