Detainee dies inside Daanbantayan police station
CEBU, Philippines - A man detained at the Daanbantayan Police Station was found dead on his bed early morning last Thursday.
Dr. Nicomedes Jabil Jr., the municipal health officer, declared the detainee dead. The detainee was identified as Hospicio Sanchez, 80, of Barangay Tapilon, Daanbantayan.
Jabil said Sanchez died of cardio respiratory arrest or cardiac arrest, which manifested by loss of consciousness and absence of pulse and breathing.
Other detainees inside the jail claimed that Sanchez went to bed about 2am after watching television. A few hours later at 6am, they noticed that Sanchez was still sleeping, which was reportedly unusual because he would always wake up before 6am. PO2 Alfredo Mandal said that recently, Sanchez seldom ate his food and just poured the same into a plastic bag.
“Iyabo niya hasta gatas, iyang pamilya mura’g wala na lang pud ba,” Mandal said.
Sanchez was placed behind bars last March 2005 for rape charges.
During the time he was detained, he had to be taken to the hospital due to stomach pain.
His family took his remains to the Our Lady Funeral Homes in Barangay Poblacion with the help of barangay officials. (FREEMAN)
