Two senior citizens die in road mishap

CEBU, Philippines - Two senior citizens died Friday afternoon after a van-for-hire hit them while walking at the Transcentral Highway in Barangay Prenza, Balamban town.

Dominga Claros Salvacion, 69, resident of the said place, and Alfredo Mosquera Rojas, 67, resident of Sitio Lacdon Brgy. Cambuhawi, Balamban suffered severe injuries after the van driven by Joel Manabat Mananay, 36, hit them while crossing the highway.

Initial investigation shows that Mananay was heading towards Barangay Prenza from the town proper when the victims suddenly crossed the highway. The driver said he was caught by surprise and was no longer able to step on the brakes.

Mananay brought the victims to the Balamban District Hospital where Salvacion was declared dead on arrival. Rojas was transferred to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center but he also died few hours later.

The driver surrendered himself to the police and will be charged for reckless imprudence resulting to double homicide. (FREEMAN)
