Hontiveros vows aid to Mahiga

CEBU, Philippines - Councilor Alvin Dizon and Akbayan Party national spokeswoman Risa Hontiveros yesterday visited the families affected by the clearing operation in Mahiga Creek in Barangay Mabolo.

Hontiveros said that what she heard from the affected families will be brought to attention of the local government and private sectors.

As to their arsenal, they can immediately give legislative support to the affected families in Mahiga Creek that include executive actions, perhaps with the partnership with councilor Dizon or other forms of assistance for a local mass struggle.

According to Hontiveros, their party is hoping on a rationale from the national housing body for the urban poor in Cebu City and they can give the best suggestions as to the context of the urban poor.

Affected families in Mahiga Creek did not appear that content with the promises of Hontiveros and Dizon, but they are still hoping that the clearing operation will be stopped and they will be allowed to rebuild their homes.

Meanwhile, when sought for comments on the death threat against Mayor Michael Rama for the demolitions, Dizon proposed a thorough investigation to check the veracity and to avoid insulting the residents of Mahiga Creek. (FREEMAN)
