CEBU, Philippines - A trisikad driver died after he was shot by another man on J. Briones Street, Barangay Carreta Wednesday night.
Jelmar Sumampong, 38, who also engaged in scrap buying, bore a gunshot wound to his right face after he was shot thrice by one Teodoro “Doring” Mahilum, who lives inside Ludo Cemetery.
The victim’s wife, Marites Sumampong, 28, alleged that she was with her husband around 6 p.m. when the latter confronted the suspect about their nine-year-old son who was maltreated by the suspect.
This resulted to a heated argument between the two men. But at the middle of their altercation, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot the victim before fleeing.
Roland Arpon, 40, a taxi driver and a resident of Tabogon town, told police that he timely passed by at the scene when the suspect flagged him down. Out of fear, he brought the suspect to the General Maxilom Avenue as he ordered him.
PO2 Jodan Batucan of the Homicide Section said Mahilum ordered the cab driver to drop him off near the house of Carreta barangay captain Eduardo Lauron as he allegedly intended to surrender.
Lauron admitted Mahilum went to him but only said that someone beat him up. When the barangay chief learned what really happened, the suspect has already left.
Batucan said Mahilum accused Sumampong’s son of stealing iron steel that was why he whipped him.
The police recovered a caliber .38 homemade revolver with three live ammunitions, three empty shells, and a black holster wrapped in an orange shirt at a bunkhouse near Prince Warehouse Club in North Reclamation Area.
The items were submitted to the PNP Regional Crime Laboratory-7 for ballistic examination. (FREEMAN)
