Woman and brother nabbed for illegal drugs

CEBU, Philippines - Two drug suspects were arrested in a buy-bust operation in sitio Garaje, Barangay Busay, Cebu City yesterday afternoon.

Arrested at around 2 p.m. were Evelyn Arda, 56, and her younger brother Quirico Borres, 46. Seized from them were at least 36 small packs of suspected illegal drugs.

A team from the City Intelligence Branch (CIB) of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) carried out the operation after sealing the transaction with Arda.

Chief Insp. Romeo Santander, CIB chief, identified the female suspect as a level two drug pusher who can dispose off 75 to 100 grams of shabu a week, equivalent to more or less P300,000.

Santander said they placed the suspect under surveillance for two days right after receiving a text message from an anonymous person about the suspect’s alleged illegal drug trade.

Yesterday, one of the policemen acted as poseur-buyer and pretended to buy a pack of shabu worth P300 from the suspect. The transaction was made at her house.

Just as the suspect received the P300 from the policeman, she was arrested.

Santander said they also arrested Borres, who was inside his sister’s variety store, after he was also caught possessing the same substance.

During the search at the suspect’s house, the police found the packs of suspected shabu.

The operation, the CIB chief said, was done in coordination of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) 7 and Lahug barangay officials and under the program of the Multi-agency Anti-Illegal Drugs (MAD) task force.

Santander said Arda’s husband, who is paralyzed, has just recently been released from the Cebu City Jail also for an illegal drug case.

Their son is also currently in jail for the same offense, Santander said.

A charge for selling and for possession of shabu will be filed against Arda while a case for possession of shabu will also be filed tomorrow, Monday, against her brother. (FREEMAN)
