CEBU, Philippines - A candle vendor and his wife were arrested for stabbing to death a 30-year-old man at the St. Joseph Parish Church in Barangay Tabunok, Talisay City Saturday afternoon.
Carlito Ibon, of Barangay Lorega, Cebu City suffered from a serious stab wound in the left side of his body. His friends rushed him to Talisay District Hospital and was later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City where he was declared dead on arrival.
Arrested and now detained at the Talisay City Jail in Barangay Lawaan II was Pedro Compayan, 27, and his wife, Mayeth Compayan, 24, both of Barangay Buhing Tubig, Pinamungajan.
PO3 Juanito Makabenta said, Ibon was with his friends, certain Jun-Jun and Mark, when they approached Pedro and confronted him for mauling their other friend, Jerry Godinez at the Tabunok flyover on Friday afternoon.
While they were talking, Ibon allegedly tapped and asked the suspect why he mauled Godinez.
At that instance, Mayeth reportedly arrived and told her husband to stab Ibon, to which the suspect heeded by taking a kitchen knife and stabbed the victim.
The couple tried to elude arrest but they were intercepted by the responding policemen.
Mayeth told The FREEMAN she never urged her husband to kill Ibon. “Wala uy dili na tinuod, butang-butang lang na nila,” she said in a phone interview.
She alleged that it was Godinez who first threatened her husband prompting him to maul the former.
“Giunhan na lang niya kay gibaharan na man siyang daan ni Jerry,” she said.
Appropriate charges will be filed against the couple this week. — (FREEMAN)
