Cop violates waste policy, to face probe by City Hall

- Rene U. Borromeo -

CEBU, Philippines - A policeman assigned at the Cebu City Traffic Division will be investigated for ignoring the waste segregation policy of the city government.

Cogon-Pardo Barangay Captain Eugenio Gabuya, Jr. filed a complaint against Police Officer 2 Alfredo Mañago before the office of City Councilor Nida Cabrera.

The complaint, which Cabrera brought before the City Council, was also referred to the city legal office for investigation and filing of possible case in court.

Gabuya said Mañago has been caught on several occasions by the Barangay Environmental Officers throwing unsegregated garbage. Members of the BEO have been issuing citation tickets to Mañago but the latter refused to sign and accept the notices of violations.

Among Mañago’s alleged violations are disposal of waste beyond the scheduled time, waste not properly placed in receptacles, and disposal of wastes outside its scheduled collection day.

In Cebu City, the collection of biodegradable wastes is scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Non-biodegrable wastes are to be collected on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Gabuya said being a police officer, it is highly impossible for Mañago not to know that throwing of unsegregated garbage is prohibited under the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.

Mañago was not available for comment when The FREEMAN called the Cebu City Traffic Group yesterday where he is assigned. Should Mañago refused to settle his violations amicably, the city government will be constrained to file charges in court against him. (FREEMAN)
