Schools decry CHED data

CEBU, Philippines - Some of the universities cried foul over the alleged inaccurate data published on papers regarding the average tuition fee increase for the incoming school year.

Officials of the University of San Jose-Recoletos, University of the Visayas, University of San Carlos and University of Southern Philippines-Foundation all claimed that the reported average tuition fee increase per unit was inaccurate.

USJ-R student affairs director Jesus D. Velez said that the data provided by the Commission on Higher Education showing that they have an average rate of P1,025.67 per unit or an average increase of P113.52 per unit is not true.

Velez said that based on their own computation they only have an average increase of 6.5-percent or an average rate per unit at P584.

UV also denied the published report that they have an average increase of P42.97. Pelacio Jumao-as said that all departments in the college program of the university only has an average rate per unit at P459.36 or an increase of P36.10,

The USPF whose tuition fee, according to the report, is P742.80 per unit or an average increase of P48.70 also expressed the same concern.

An official of the USPF said their average rate is only P510.75 with an average increase of 7-percent.

“Dili man gud tanan mo-eskwela og doctoral, law, ug masteral igkahuman nila’g college; mao na dili unta usahon ang average sa tanang programa,” the official said.

Dr. Jojo Ronquillo, education supervisor II of Ched-7, explained that the date published on the newspaper was based on the “average percentage increase across all programs—undergrad, and graduate programs; and law.”

But, the universities objected to the computation because it should have been based only on the college program.

Officials from the different universities are worried that the inaccurate figure might affect the number of enrollees in the coming school year.  (FREEMAN)
