Man shot dead

CEBU, Philippines - A 25-year-old man was shot dead by his neighbor while he was playing mahjong outside his house at sitio Proper, barangay Napo, Carcar City last Wednesday evening.

Police said Kerwin “Jongjong” Cabigayan of sitio Mahayahay succumbed to a gunshot wound in his nape after he was shot by Hindenberg “Toting” Velez, 41, of sitio Proper.

Initial investigation revealed that Cabigayan was with his three other neighbors, Jonathan Dayagbil, Ricardo Lopez, and Gilbert Quiña, playing mahjong when Velez came and shot Cabigayan from behind and fled on foot.

His three playmates took him to Carcar District Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician.

Senior Police Officer 1 Reynaldo Fuentes, Carcar police investigator, said they invited Velez for questioning.

He was taken to the Philippine National Police Crime Laboratory at the Camp Sotero Cabahug for a paraffin test after a witness claimed to have seen him shot Cabigayan.

Fuentes said they have yet to establish the motive of the killing.

“Dili una mi mamasangil kay lisod, unya na kung positive ang resulta sa paraffin,” the investigator said. (We can’t say anything more until we get hold of the test results.)

Cabigayan’s body now lies at Tupas Funeral Homes in barangay Poblacion. (FREEMAN)
