Girl who wasn't enrolled in private school kills self

CEBU, Philippines - She wanted to go to a private school, but her parents enrolled her in a public school instead.

This was the reason why a girl committed suicide last Monday, a day before she turned 13 years old.

Her body was found by her siblings hanging from a rope tied to a roof beam inside their house in Sitio Manzanitas, Barangay Cogon-Pardo last Monday noon.

“Ganahan daw siya og private school kay hina-hina siya og utok. Na-is daw siya sa iyang ate na mas bright pa sa iyaha,” PO2 Jodan Batucan of the Homicide Section said.

The victim’s aunt said her nieces and nephews suddenly came running to her saying they saw the victim hanging from the upper floor of their house.

They removed the girl and rushed her to the Cebu City Medical Center in hopes of reviving her but they were too late.

The victim’s mother, told police that the victim recently asked her no to continue sending her to public high school, but she said she already processed the victim’s enrolment last Monday.

It was not until later when they read her suicide note that she was disappointed she could not get into a private school.

“Minghisgot siya before sa graduation nga gusto niya sa private mag-high school. Ingon ko apiki man ta karon, sa public lang sa ka… Kay kung nag-ingon pa siya, naa man iyang mga uyoan, magpatabang na laman unta mi og paskwela niya,” the mother said, in tears.

She and her husband, a construction worker, denied radio reports yesterday that they were maltreating their daughter.

“Wala tawn na namo gi-daog-daog. Angay among tratar sa among mga anak,” her father said. The suicide victim was the third of their four children.

A 20 feet long rope, a monobloc chair, and the suicide note, written on two notebook pages, were recovered at the place.

On her casket, the family put a gallon of her favorite ice cream, it was supposed to be her treat on her birthday yesterday. Her burial will be on Sunday. - /BRP (FREEMAN)
