Public warned vs. heat stroke

- Mitchelle L. Palaubsanon -

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Health in Region 7 is warning the public to stay out of the heat of the sun especially from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and use sun protection in order to avoid heat stroke as summer is still here.

DOH regional director Susana Madarietta said that it is best to avoid the heat of the sun during the said period.

“Heat stroke can cause death if not attended immediately,” Madarietta said.

She advised that people should bring umbrellas when going outdoor, use sunblock as added protection and always bring water to avoid dehydration.

Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness when the body overheats and can’t cool down. The body cannot take off the excessive heat from the body by sweating because of dehydration and/or humid environment.

Signs of heat exhaustion include warm, flushed skin, faintness, dizziness, weakness and headache.

As a way to prevent heat stroke, DOH advised to limit the amount of time that one spend outdoors, wear a wide-brimmed hat and long-sleeved clothing when outdoors and scheduling heavy-duty activities for the beginning or end of the day, when it’s cooler. – (FREEMAN)
