Rama is RDC-7 chairman

- Jessica Ann R. Pareja -

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama has been appointed chairman of the Regional Development Council in Central Visayas by President Benigno Aquino III.

Rama received his appointment yesterday from National Economic Development Authority-7 Director and RDC-7 Vice Chairwoman Marlene Rodriguez. Attached to the communication was the appointment letter from Aquino dated March 31, 2011.

“The chairperson shall serve for a term of three years which should coincide with his regular term as local elective official. By virtue hereof, you may qualify and enter upon the performance of the duties of the office,” the letter read.

Rama replaces the late governor of Negros Oriental Augustin Perdices who was first appointed by Aquino for the position last December 2, 2010. His co-chairman is Argeo Melisimo, president of the First Consolidated Bank in Bohol.

Perdices died of stomach cancer last January 5 before he was able to take oath as RDC-7 chairman for 2010-2013. After his death, NEDA-7 submitted another list of nominees which included Rama, Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes and the governors of Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor.

Rama did not expect to be chosen but said he is accepting the challenge.

“Deeply honored. Thanks to the president. Another challenge,” Rama said in a text message.

Cebu City Public Information Officer Florito “Carlo” Duga-duga said that the mayor will review the mandate of the chairman of RDC as his first assignment to himself.

“Niingon sad ang mayor na dako ni sya og benefits sa Cebu and sa whole Central Visayas,” Duga-duga said. — /BRP (FREEMAN)
