Capitol to give award to slain rookie cop

CEBU, Philippines - The provincial government is thinking of giving a posthumous award to a field training police officer who was shot dead by a robber near Mananga Bridge in Barangay Tabunok, Talisay City and extending assistance to the family of the victim.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia has instructed Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Marivic Garces to assess and get the details of the family of PO1 William Mangubat.

Garces will submit her recommendation to the governor as soon as she can finish the report.

The details will guide how the provincial government can assist not only through cash but also “other aspects” the family of the slain police officer, said Garcia.

Garcia commends Mangubat for responding to an alarm even if it cost his life.

Meanwhile, Police Regional Office director Ager Ontog said his office will give a commendation to Mangubat for his heroism while the police official expressed his deepest sympathy to the family of the slain officer.

“He’s a hero indeed sayang siya ‘yung nawala during the encounter,” Ontog said, adding PRO-7 is also giving financial assistance to Mangubat’s family.

Mangubat was assigned at the Talisay City Police Office since last month.

He reportedly approached a man carrying a caliber .45 pistol and a handbag together with a companion alighting from a multicab.

But while he was nearing, the suspect shot him in the head causing his instantaneous death.

Prior to the incident, a woman went to the police station and reported that she was robbed of her hand bag by two men who alighted from the multicab in Mananga Bridge.

Mangubat was laid to rest yesterday.   (FREEMAN NEWS)
