Rama wants small markets monitored
CEBU, Philippines - Mayor Michael Rama wants the members of the Cebu City Market Authority to also include the small markets in their scope and to see to it that these “tyanggihan” are organized and will not contribute to road congestions.
Rama has observed that the members of the market authority, which is headed by the city administrator, only focuses on the so-called nine satellite markets in the city.
The mayor stressed he wants it also to look into the needs of some small markets like those situated at corner V. Rama Avenue and M. Velez; at the back of Aderan Hotel in Barangay Lahug; in Barangay Luz; in Barangay Punta Princesa and in Tabada Street, Mambaling.
According to Rama, there is need for the market authority to look for another market site for the vendors presently vending beside the road at the back of Aderan Hotel in Lahug.
The road going to Sitio Laguerta in Barangay Lahug has become very congested because vendors are allegedly occupying both sides of the road selling fish, vegetables, rice, used clothing, meats and other commodities.
There is a suggestion that the city officials should ask Governor Gwendolyn Garcia to allow the province-owned lot situated at the slope of the curb road going to Marco Polo Hotel be made into a market site.
Rama said he also wants the “tyanggihan” along Tabada Street in Barangay Mambaling be looked into because “we need more roads so that we can have an easy access from one place to another.”
At present, vehicles can’t easily pass by Tabada Street because some vendors are already occupying the road.
In the so-called “Banawa Market” the mayor has observed that the sidewalks can no longer be used by the pedestrians because they are being used by the vendors.
Meanwhile, Rama agreed to the proposal that public weighing scales shall be installed in every public market so the consumers can check if the vendors are using the correct weighing scales.
Poblete has assured to look into the concerns of the mayor and he is scheduled to discuss them to the members of the market authority during their meeting this Tuesday. (FREEMAN)
