City planning to buy more garbage trucks

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines - The city has set aside P60 to 70 million for the purchase of eight compactor garbage trucks and dredging equipment which will be used to improve the city’s trash collection and disposal, this according to Councilor Eduardo “Edu” Rama, chairman of the committee on public services in the city council.

Edu said the city is also set to purchase a mini-payloader, a backhoe, a forklift and 10 motorcycles for garbage monitoring.

Part of the steps to contain the garbage problem, the councilor said, was to require each barangay to have its own Material Recovery Facility, 26 barangays that did so have already received shredder machines.

The shredders will help cut the volume of garbage dumped in the Inayawan sanitary landfill by up to 20 percent. The shredders can shred up to 300 kilos of non-biodegradable trash per day.

Aside from Councilor Rama, City Councilor Nida Cabrera has also been working to reduce waste being dumped in the sanitary landfill.   While Cebu Mayor Michael Rama and Vice Mayor Joy Augustus Young have conflicting views on the drainage master plan and garbage disposal, Edu said they are both important.

The mayor is considering borrowing money from international agencies for drainage projects as one of the solutions to the flooding while Young said the drainage master plan should not be prioritized over garbage disposal. (FREEMAN)
