Sanchez admits LP still weak in Cebu

CEBU, Philippines - The leaders of the ruling Liberal Party are not obliged to recruit members in Cebu despite their being short in number as against the local One Cebu Party.

But LP will welcome elected officials who have the desire to join and adheres the principle of the party of “principled politics and good governance.”

This was shared yesterday by Cebu Vice Governor Gregorio Sanchez, Jr. to Capitol reporters after attending the 65th founding anniversary of LP in Manila last Wednesday.

While he described LP nationwide as “very strong”, Sanchez admitted that membership in Cebu is weak.

At the anniversary, Sanchez, Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, Cebu City South District Rep. Tomas Osmeña, North District Rep. Rachel ‘Cutie’ del Mar, former Cebu City Councilor Hilario Davide III who is also the party’s provincial chairman, Bogo Mayor Celestino “Junie” Martinez, Jr. and Edmund Sanchez were appointed members of the LP National Executive Council, the policy-making body of the party.

Sanchez said that as members of the policy making body of LP, they are tasked to be responsible in the strengthening of the party’s membership in Cebu.

But Sanchez said it is not necessary to recruit members as they are not after numbers, although they will accept members who adhere to the principle of the party.

Sanchez expects more local officials to join the party soon, seeing the advantage to be with the administration party.

“There is advantage if you belong to the same party. You can access support from Malacañang,” Sanchez said.

A convention for local LP members will soon be launched and to scrutinize officials who wish to join the party, added Sanchez. (FREEMAN)
