CEBU, Philippines - A 68-year-old woman died after she was hit by a speeding taxicab on Escario Street, Barangay Camputhaw, Cebu City yesterday.

Ceferina Cuering, resident of the area, sustained severe injuries in the head and was pronounced dead a few hours after she was brought to the Cebu City Medical Center for treatment.

The driver of the taxi, Ulysses Comaingking, a resident of barangay San Roque, Sogod was detained at the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO)- Traffic Division detention cell after he voluntarily surrendered.

Comaingking was driving Eag Taxi, bearing plate numbers GXB-684, bound for IT Park in Barangay Apas, when upon reaching the area, Cuering allegedly suddenly crossed.

Cuering, who was a member of a charismatic group, came from an activity at the Capitol Parish when she crossed the street. The victim allegedly looked away after a colleague called her and failed to notice the coming taxi.

Comaingking alleged that he was not able to step on the brakes because he was confused if Cuering will continue to cross the street or go back to her colleagues.

“Nagduha-duha kog tunob dayon sa brake kay abi nako mobalik siya sa agi human siya gitawag sa iyang kauban,” he said.

SPO1 Porferio Lim Jr. of CCPO- Traffic Division said that the attending physician of Cuering said she died at 2:45 in the morning yesterday.
