CEBU, Philippines - A 27-year-old man died after he was repeatedly punched by an alleged member of a fraternity along N. Bacalso Ave., Barangay Duljo-Fatima, Cebu City early yesterday morning.

The fatality was identified as Oyde Basirgo, single and resident of Talamban Proper, Barangay Talamban. The unidentified assailant was allegedly a member of the Akhro fraternity.

According to the victim’s neighbor, Rolando Bautista, 29, he was with the victim and another companion on board a jeepney bound for Colon area around 3 a.m.

The assailant was also on board the jeepney and had three companions, including a girl.

The assailant ordered the driver to stop as he and his companions were to get off the jeepney. When all four of them have disembarked, the assailant went near the back of the victim and punched Basirgo’s nape several times.

The assailant then casually walked towards the interior portion of B. Aranas St. while the victim went unconscious. Bautista said they just came from a drinking session at Greenbelt in Barangay Mambaling where they attended a birthday party.

Police said the assailant might have gotten mad at the behavior of the victim who was believed to be drunk. Their female companion might have also been offended by the victim.

Meanwhile in Danao City, a 75-year-old man died after he was hacked several times at Sitio Cabulihan, Barangay Baliang Sunday afternoon.

Quirino Avila was confined at the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) and died two days later.

His assailant, a 29-year-old resident of Barangay Looc, surrendered Monday to the former barangay captain of Baliang, Rudy Morales. (FREEMAN)
