Rama says Bantay Dagat chief should be replaced

CEBU, Philippines - Mayor Michael Rama said he is willing to let go of Bantay Dagat project director Cesar Enriquez if it is proven that he has not been performing well for the past four years.

Rama made the statement following Governor Gwendolyn Garcia’s challenge for Cebu City to actively support the province’s campaign against illegal fishing.

Enriquez, a retired colonel, took over the post of the late Elpidio “Jojo” dela Victoria who was gunned down in April 2006. The reason behind the shooting remains unknown. 

But reports had it that unlike Dela Victoria, Enriquez has allegedly not been active in “market denial” or in confiscating illegally-caught products that are shipped to Cebu City.

Rama said he will go through Enriquez’ records to assess his performance.

“Kon duna mo’y tawo nga haum nga mogunit sa maong pwesto pagka hepe sa Bantay Dagat, i-rekomendar nako kay akong pulihan si Col. Enriquez kun tinuod nga wala siya’y maayong agi,” Rama said.

A few years ago, a group of fishermen from barangays Ermita, Pasil, Duljo-Fatima and Mambaling accused Enriquez favoring commercial fishing vessels operating in the seawaters of Cebu City. They also demanded for his dismissal for allegedly failing to fulfill his responsibilities and encouraging illegal fishing.

The law prohibits commercial fishing vessels within 15 kilometers from the shore.   Reports also had it that Enriquez allegedly sold two engines from confiscated pump boats, however, no investigation was opened on this regard.

The FREEMAN called Enriquez yesterday but he could not be reached for comment.

In an earlier interview, Enriquez said he has been requesting for equipment for seaborne patrol, but the city government reportedly has not acted on his request until now. (THE FREEMAN)
