CEBU, Philippines – The Consortium for Gender, Health and Development (CGHD), an association of health, women, gay professionals and grassroots organizations, held a candle lighting activity in support of women's rights.
Despite heavy rains, the activity still pushed through yesterday afternoon at Fuente Osmeña Circle.
The event served as commemoration for women who were victims of human rights violations and those who died after being deprived of basic reproductive health services.
CGHD is also supporting the Comprehensive Reproductive Health Bill that is currently pending in Congress.
Emmie de Jesus of Gabriela partylist, Professor Edgar Gahisan, health professional Jethame Paglinawan, Bebe Allere of Cebu Urban Poor Women's League, Roxon Doron of Bisdak Pide and Dr. Mark Molina explained the need for the passage of the bill.
The Reproductive Health Bill aims to guarantee universal access to methods and information on birth control and maternal care as proposed by Rep. Edcel Lagman.
The activity, which was very significant since it was held on the feast day of the Immaculate Conception, was also in relation to the celebration of the International Human Rights Day today. - Karen P. Ceniza and Junalyn S, Rufin, USJ-R Masscom interns/LPM (FREEMAN)
