Administrator guarantees markets in Talisay don't sell "double-dead" meat

-

CEBU, Philippines - The Talisay City Hall yesterday assured market goers that public markets in the city are not selling “double-dead” meat since all meat products pass through slaughterhouse inspectors.

City administrator Richel Bacaltos gave this assurance amid fears of the entry of diseased meat in public markets all over Cebu Talisay City.

Bacaltos said “only” slaughtered animals with the inspection marks are allowed to be sold in public markets.

Meanwhile, a proposed resolution requesting for the regular ocular inspection in public markets to ensure that no double-dead meat will be sold there was referred to the committee on market operations.

The said proposal was introduced by Councilor Choy Aznar after hearing reports of the entry of the kind of meat in Talisay.

Double-dead meat has been banned by the national Meat Inspection Service due to the possible diseases carried by animals which could kill.

For his part however, Councilor Danny Caballero, a meat dealer, said not all animals which died before they were supposed to be slaughtered are “unsafe.”

He said there are some of those which did not survive the long travel as some of them are bought from neighboring provinces, for example.

“Naa may uban ana nila nga di kaagwanta nya moutong na lang mao nang mamatay. Pero kanang klase nga animal dili na unsafe. Anyway, inspeksyunon pa man gihapon na sila sa taga-slaugtherhouse before i-release sa mga public market,” said Caballero.

He however supports Aznar’s proposed resolution saying that it would at least keep the buying public at ease especially that the yuletide season is coming and the demand for meat products is expected to increase.

The sale of double-dead meat is a violation of Republic Act 9296, known as the Meat Inspection Code, and the Consumer Act of the Philippines. (FREEMAN)
